Recent Performance of Corn Futures
Corn futures saw an increase by 6 to 8 cents leading up to the weekend, as traders eagerly awaited the forthcoming USDA reports. In the latest week, the price for July contracts decreased by 11.25 cents, while December contracts fell by 14.25 cents. The national average cash price for corn was reported at $3.94, reflecting an increase of 8 cents.
Anticipated USDA Grain Stocks Report
As the USDA Grain Stocks report approaches, analysts predict that total corn stock levels will reach approximately 4.625 billion bushels as of June 1. This projection indicates a reduction of 372 million bushels compared to the previous year. Estimates for corn stock levels vary, ranging from 4.459 billion to 4.798 billion bushels. Furthermore, the upcoming acreage report is expected to reveal that around 95.4 million acres of corn will be planted, based on findings from a Bloomberg survey, marking a rise of about 200,000 acres since March.
Commitment of Traders Report Analysis
The latest Commitment of Traders report from the CFTC indicated that large speculators in corn futures have reduced their net short positions by 2,506 contracts. As of the report date, these traders held a net short total of 182,282 contracts.
Export Sales Insights
In terms of export sales, total commitments reached 67.574 million metric tons, which accounts for 99% of the USDA’s projected sales for the year, albeit slightly lagging behind the average sales pace of 100%.
Canadian Corn Acreage Data
Statistics Canada recently released data estimating that Canadian corn acreage has risen to 3.732 million acres, a 2.2% increase from the previous year.
