Current Trends in the Corn Market

As the corn market experiences fluctuations, recent trading has shown contracts moving up between 2 to 5 cents. However, the closing rates from Friday were less favorable, with many contracts declining by 3 to 5 cents. Specifically, the July futures saw a 6 ¼ cent drop over the week, and December contracts mirrored this trend with a decrease of 6 ½ cents. Notably, the CmdtyView national average cash corn price concluded at $4.15 ½, reflecting a decrease of 4 ½ cents.

Investor Sentiment Shifts

The Commitment of Traders report released by the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) indicated a significant change in investor positions among managed money speculative funds. These investors transitioned from a net long position to a net short position, totaling 84,976 contracts. This marked a bearish shift of 98,869 contracts in the week ending May 13.

Export Commitments and Performance

In terms of export sales, total commitments for corn have now reached 62.088 million metric tons (MMT). This figure represents 94% of the USDA’s revised export projection announced recently. Typically, it is expected that export bookings would meet around 95% of the projection by this time of the year. Furthermore, actual exports reported via the Foreign Agricultural Service (FAS) stand at 45.015 MMT, which accounts for 68% of the USDA forecast, performing better than the usual 66% pace.

Looking at recent corn prices, various futures closed as follows:

  • July 25 Corn: Closed at $4.43 ½, reflecting a decrease of 5 cents, though it is currently seeing an uptick of 4 ½ cents.
  • Nearby Cash Price: Stood at $4.15 ½, down 4 ½ cents.
  • September 25 Corn: Closed at $4.21 ½, down 3 ½ cents, but currently trending upwards by 3 cents.
  • December 25 Corn: Closed at $4.35 ½, marking a decline of 3 ¼ cents, with a slight recovery currently at up 2 ½ cents.
  • New Crop Cash Price: Reported at $3.93, down 3 cents.
