Stephen Curry, the renowned Golden State Warriors guard, isn’t planning to hang up his sneakers just yet. However, he’s already mapping out several avenues for his future career, including roles in broadcasting, team ownership, and possibly competing on the PGA Tour Champions.
In a recent interview, Curry revealed to CNBC about his entrepreneurial ambitions. At 37 years old, he serves as the CEO of Thirty Ink, a diverse portfolio that features various businesses such as Unanimous Media, a bourbon brand named Gentleman's Cut, and a marketing consultancy, 7k. Upon retiring from professional basketball, he intends to take a more hands-on approach in managing these businesses.
Curry is also inspired by NBA legends and looks up to Michael Jordan, who famously owned the Charlotte Hornets. Curry expressed his interest in becoming part of an ownership group for an NBA franchise, seeking the opportunity to influence how a team is run. "I'm excited about pursuing this," he stated, acknowledging that current regulations prevent active players from engaging in ownership roles until after retirement.
However, Curry recognizes the financial challenges inherent in ownership, particularly with the escalating valuations of NBA teams. According to recent assessments, the average value of an NBA franchise has reached approximately $4.66 billion. While Curry has made significant earnings—estimated at $153.8 million last year from salary and endorsements—he remains realistic about the financial hurdles of owning a team.
Apart from NBA ownership, Curry is also invested in other sports ventures. He has backed Unrivaled, a women’s 3-on-3 basketball league, and has expressed interest in acquiring a WNBA team, further diversifying his investment portfolio.
Curry has made strides into the entertainment industry through Unanimous Media, appearing in projects like the sitcom "Mr. Throwback" and the documentary "Stephen Curry: Underrated." As he considers his options after basketball, Curry isn’t ruling out a potential career in broadcasting. He indicated he would be open to opportunities with networks such as NBC, ESPN, or Amazon Prime Video but emphasized a thoughtful approach rather than rushing into a decision.
"My goal is to be all-in when I engage in any new venture," Curry remarked. He's currently evaluating various pathways that may align with his interests and career objectives.
In addition to his business and broadcasting plans, Curry is contemplating a future in golf, specifically on the PGA Tour Champions, which is tailored for players over the age of 50. Although this may seem like a distant prospect—Curry won’t hit that age for another 13 years—he takes his golfing seriously.
Curry, who has proven himself as an adept golf competitor, won the 2023 American Century Championship, a prestigious event that gathers both current and former athletes known for their golfing prowess. With his proven skills on the course, Curry aims to pursue this challenging path, recognizing the rigorous qualifying process involved.
"Competing at that level would be an exciting goal," he said. "It’s a tough tour for those not who aren't former champions, but I’m willing to put in the effort to try."
As Curry evaluates his future beyond basketball, he is confident in exploring multiple avenues. From successfully overseeing his businesses to potentially owning an NBA franchise, his ambitions illustrate a drive to leave a lasting impact both on and off the court. Whether in broadcasting or golf, Stephen Curry remains focused on carving out a diverse and influential role in his post-NBA journey.
